ALL ABOUT: Therapeutic Ultrasound

What is therapeutic ultrasound?
Therapeutic ultrasound is a treatment modality that uses high-frequency sound waves to deliver mechanical energy into targeted tissues. It can be used as part of a massage therapy treatment to complement hands-on techniques and help address specific areas of concern. Unlike diagnostic ultrasound, which is used to create images, therapeutic ultrasound is used for treatment purposes.

What does therapeutic ultrasound feel like?
Most people feel very little during treatment. You may notice a gentle warmth or mild sensation as the ultrasound head moves over the treatment area. Like all treatments, if you experience discomfort, let me know right away so I can adjust or stop the treatment.

What can therapeutic ultrasound be used for?
Therapeutic ultrasound may be incorporated into treatment when appropriate for things such as:
- Muscle tension and soft-tissue restrictions
- Certain tendon and ligament conditions
- Scar tissue and adhesions
- Joint stiffness
- Chronic or subacute soft-tissue concerns
- Mastitis, clogged milk ducts

Will ultrasound "break up" scar tissue?
You may hear ultrasound described as "breaking up" scar tissue, but that's an oversimplification. Ultrasound may influence tissue extensibility and the local tissue environment, which can make be helpful. It isn't going to magically dissolve scar tissue in one session.

Does therapeutic ultrasound reduce inflammation?
It can be used with the goal of influencing the local tissue environment, but ultrasound isn't automatically appropriate for every acute inflammatory condition.

How long does an ultrasound treatment take?
Therapeutic ultrasound is generally used for a short period of time on a specific area, rather than being applied to your entire body. Treatment time and settings are selected based on the tissue being treated, the treatment goal, and your individual presentation.

Can everyone have therapeutic ultrasound?
No. There are certain contraindications and precautions. If you have a medical condition, recent surgery, implanted device, or are pregnant, please let me know before treatment. Ultrasound may not be appropriate over areas such as:
- Certain areas with impaired sensation
- Active infection
- Known or suspected malignancy
- Certain vascular conditions
- Areas over certain implanted electronic devices
- The eyes or reproductive organs
- Certain areas during pregnancy, depending on the location and circumstances

Will I feel better after one treatment?
Some people notice changes immediately, while others may require multiple treatments or a combination of approaches. Your response will depend on what we're treating, how long you've had the issue, and a whole bunch of other factors.

Do I need to book a special ultrasound appointment?
Usually, no. I currently have it as an add-on service, however, if you want to have it as a stand alone appointment, please reach out to me directly.

Is therapeutic ultrasound right for me?
Maybe! That's something we'll determine together based on your symptoms, history, assessment findings, and treatment goals.
