Your First Reiki Appointment: What to Expect

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive healing practice that is safe for everyone. The treatment involves the practitioner using their hands to channel energy, supporting the body’s natural ability to relax and restore balance. If you’re coming in for your first Reiki session, there are many calming and restorative benefits to look forward to.

For your appointment, please arrive at the clinic about 15 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork. When your session begins, I will bring you into my treatment room where we’ll make sure you’re comfortable. Reiki can be received either lying down or sitting in a chair, depending on what feels best for you.

It’s recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing and remove any jewelry before your session so you can relax as much as possible. Jewelry can sometimes be uncomfortable during a treatment, and some people believe that metals and stones may influence the flow of energy.

Before we begin, you’re welcome to share any specific areas of concern (physical, emotional, or energetic.) While Reiki naturally flows to where it’s most needed, understanding your intentions can help guide the session and ensure extra attention is given where you feel it would be most beneficial.

During the treatment, I use Usui Reiki, which involves gently scanning above the body to sense shifts or imbalances in the energy field. From there, I work through the body’s major energy centers, often referred to as chakras, helping to clear and balance them.

As the Reiki energy begins to flow, you may notice sensations such as warmth, gentle tingling, or a sense of deep relaxation. Some people report seeing colors or light patterns with their eyes closed, while others simply experience a calming stillness. It’s also very common to fall asleep during a session—this is perfectly normal, and the Reiki energy continues to work whether you’re awake or resting.

If certain areas feel particularly blocked or in need of attention, I may spend additional time focusing on those parts of the body. A typical Reiki session usually lasts about an hour, although the exact length can vary depending on your needs.

After your session, your experience may differ from someone else’s. Some people feel energized and refreshed, while others feel peaceful or a little tired. Both responses are normal, as your body processes the energy and continues its natural healing process.

Reiki energy may continue to support your body even after the session has ended. For ongoing concerns or chronic conditions, follow-up sessions may be helpful. Reiki can be received as often as you feel guided—whether daily, weekly, or monthly.

Above all, Reiki is a gentle practice designed to support balance, relaxation, and overall well-being.
